In This Strange Labyrinth - Lady Mary Wroth
In this strange Labyrinth how shall I turn,
Ways are on all sides while the way I miss:
If to the right hand, there, in love I burn,
Let me go forward, therein danger is.
If to the left, suspicion hinders bliss;
Let me turn back, shame cries I ought return:
Nor faint, though crosses my fortunes kiss,
Stand still is harder, although sure to mourn.
Thus let me take the right, or left-hand way,
Go forward, or stand still, or back retire:
I must these doubts endure without allay
Or help, but travel find for my best hire.
Yet that which most my troubled sense doth move,
Is to leave all, and take the thread of Love.
This poem is my favorite poem ever. Lady Mary Wroth composed it beautifully by using sophisticated words which can be interpreted in more than one way. Every person can have different interpretations of this poem. For me, the word 'Labyrinth' is a metaphor of life. Life has many directions, life has many choices, life has many complicated ways just like a labyrinth has. Those directions, choices, and ways that are offered by life have their own consequences. The consequences can be either good or bad. Hence, this is our own job as a human who has a brain to think and an intuition to feel to choose which way we will take. Because life is all about choices and those choices are complicated which sometimes offer obstacles. If we chose a wrong way, we would be trapped and couldn't find a way out from this labyrinth. In this stage, we would face a problem and our strengths would be tested. What would we do? Of course thinking, finding another way out and solving the problem not running away from it, we have to conquer this labyrinth. But what if after a long time we couldn't find a way out? Would we give up? It all depends on how tough ourselves are. But for me, all we have to do is stepping forward and facing all consequences even the way out is hard enough, really hard, super hard to be found and passed. We might find wrong ways for billion times but don't ever lose our faith that we will find the right way, eventually. Because God will always lead our ways, and all depends to our attitudes, if we listen to Him we will be save from this labyrinth and if we don't we're gonna be trapped there forever.
